Nature or Nurture: A Tale of Two Cousins

December 1, 2008

Lisa is three years younger than me. She grew up in Iowa and I grew up a traveling military brat. We saw each other rarely, except for the times she visited us in Alaska and Europe. We did not keep in touch but, as my cousin, she did receive a few of my nice dresses when I grew out of them.

Then one day Lisa moves to Colorado to attend Naropa University. A relative of mine attending a Buddhist university in Boulder? A first cousin? A first cousin from IOWA?

We find out that as adults we have very similar ideas about the world that differ significantly from our grandparents, parents, siblings, and other cousins.

We even both enjoy a good single malt scotch!

Should we credit nature or nurture?
